The name Bruno Massel is a very feared one within the ranks of NHRA Sportsman racing. The double-generation team (Bruno Sr. & Bruno Jr.) have campaigned a series of highly competitive and very innovative Chevrolet cars for many seasons. Based out of Woodridge, Illinois, the team purchased a 2014 COPO from Scoggin-Dickey Chevrolet early last year, which they took delivery of directly from the Oxford, Michigan, build center. That FS/A-classed machine, which made history by winning the NHRA Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals title last September (the first ever national title for a new COPO), features a 350ci supercharged engine program and has run a stout 8.51 e.t. at 160 mph. The Camaro complements the team’s totally unique 2010 DD/AT Chevy Cobalt, which is raced within NHRA Competition Eliminator. That car is a 2x NHRA Lucas Oil World Championship machine that uses an extremely creative 135ci turbocharged Chevy Ecotec four-cylinder engine. Using that engine, the Cobalt has sped to an amazing 6.86 e.t. at 202 mph in the quarter-mile and has continued the Massel’s outright nine-year ownership of the NHRA class record, which they have set and reset multiple times. The team receives sponsorship from Autogeek.net, Chevrolet, BigStuff3, K&N, Elite Motorsports, M/T, Kilgore Transmissions, and of course, Bruno’s Automotive Products. That company, which was founded by Bruno Sr., is where the BRT Converter Drive was invented and patented back in 1989; a truly key component that has become a standard within drag racing, allowing a torque converter to be mated to multiple brands of racing transmissions, including Liberty, Jeffco, Gforce, and B&J.
