Muscle cars: 20 that made history

Muscle cars put more emphasis on straight-line speed than road course handling, so the Shelby Mustang and Boss 302 weren't muscle cars in the strictest sense of the term. Throw a rip-roaring big block under the hood, however, and you have a Mustang muscle car. Such was the case with the Cobra Jet 428-cubic-inch V8. Wildly underrated at 335 horsepower, a CJ-equipped Mustang posted a 13.56-second quarter-mile for Hot Rod magazine. CJ Mustangs enjoyed great success in the National Hot Rod Association's Super Stock class that season, but with that big, heavy engine under the hood they weren't great at taking corners.
