When a maverick group of General Motors executives ignored corporate policy by squeezing a 389-cubic-inch V8 engine into the midsize Pontiac Tempest, they kicked off the 1960s muscle-car era. The car was the GTO — a name borrowed from Ferrari, meaning Gran Turismo Omologato — and the engine made as much as 348 horsepower when equipped with Pontiac's Tri-Power 3-carburetor setup. Those executives got around the corporate rule by making the GTO a $296 option package. At only 3,000 pounds, a Tri-Power GTO posted a zero-to-60 time of 5.7 seconds and a quarter-mile run of 14.1 seconds for Road & Track magazine.
