After a seven-year hiatus, the Camaro returned as a much different car. With styling heavily influenced by the fan-favorite 1969 model, the new Camaro became an immediate hit. Even though it was heavier than its rival, the Ford Mustang, and outward visibility was poor, the Camaro outsold the Mustang in its first full year. A 3.6-liter 304-horsepower V6 engine provided plenty of power in base trim, while the SS got a 6.2-liter V8 with 400 or 426 horsepower, depending on the transmission. We didn't like the handling of those first fifth-generation Camaros, but that would soon change.
