With sales flagging and financial issues at General Motors, the fourth-generation Camaro almost never came to be. Worse yet, some within the company wanted it to be a front-wheel-drive car. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed. The new Camaro was longer, lower and wider than the old car, although the rear portion of the body carried over from the previous model. Only a coupe was offered that first year, but a ragtop would return for 1994. The top performer was the Z/28, which received a 30-horsepower boost, up to 275, for its Corvette-sourced 5.7-liter LT1 V8 engine
