After 12 model years, the Camaro was finally redesigned for 1982. The third-generation Camaro was almost 10 inches shorter than the outgoing car on a 7-inch shorter wheelbase. Weight was down by around 500 pounds, and handling was predictably improved. However, performance wasn't very impressive. The most powerful engine was the Z/28 305-cubic-inch V8. It made only 165 horsepower, pushing the car to a zero- to-60-mph sprint of 7.9 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 17.5 seconds. The base car was weak, with a paltry 90 horsepower from its 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine.
