New heads and induction helped the 302-cubic-inch V8 engine — now called the 5.0 — breathe better, adding 25 horsepower for a total of 225. The 5.0 was standard in the GT and optional in the stealthier LX, and it pushed the car from zero to 60 mph in a quick 6.1 seconds. Suspension tweaks created a fine-handling car, and the Mustang quickly gained a reputation as the best bang for the buck among American performance cars.
