In the 1990s the muscle car changed. Automakers experimented with muscular trucks and SUVs, and handling became a prerequisite for muscle cars. The Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird received a hot new engine for 1998: the 5.7-liter LS-1 V8. A detuned version of the new Corvette engine, it made 305 horsepower in the Firebird Formula, but the Trans Am with the WS-6 ram air package boosted output to 320 horsepower. With this setup, the Trans Am could sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds and cover the quarter-mile in 13.4 seconds.
