Emissions standards, high insurance costs and a gas crisis killed the muscle-car era, but Buick brought back performance in the mid-1980s with the Grand National and its 3.8-liter turbocharged V6 engine. An even more powerful GNX model was added for 1987. It used a larger turbocharger and a bigger intercooler to make 276 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque. The GNX was ridiculously fast, posting a 4.7-second zero-to-60 mph time and a 13.5-second quarter-mile. Only 547 were built, though a 20th-anniversary Pontiac Trans Am received the same engine in 1989.
