In 1970, GM lifted its restriction on big engines in midsize cars, and Buick responded with the 350-horsepower GS 455. A $199 Stage 1 package added a hairier cam, bigger valves and higher compression for a total of 360 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. In Motor Trend testing, the GS 455 Stage 1 posted a 13.38 quarter-mile — the fastest time the magazine had ever clocked for an American car. A $1,195 GSX package added some visual spice, with a hood tach, a front lip spoiler, a rear spoiler, body stripes, and Apollo White or Saturn Yellow paint. It also got a stiffer suspension.
