Muscle cars: 20 that made history

In the muscle-car era's pinnacle year, AMC introduced its most powerful engine: a 390-cubic-inch 340-horsepower V8, and stuffed it into its new midsize Rebel SST fastback. The result was the Rebel Machine, which also featured a hood scoop, front disc brakes and a Hurst 4-speed manual transmission. Initial cars had a red, white and blue paint scheme, but other colors became available later. Performance was brisk, as Road Test magazine posted a 14.57-second quarter-mile, but it wasn't a match for the quickest muscle cars of the day. A total of 2,326 Rebel Machines were built.
