Like the GTO, the Chevelle was a midsize car. The SS variants featured powerful small-block V8 engines for 1964 and '65, but in late '65 the Chevelle got its first big block: a 396-cubic-inch 375-horsepower V8 from the Corvette. The car was called the Chevelle SS396 Z16, and it added a whopping $1,501 to the car's $2,647 base price — a likely reason only 201 were produced. Offered only for the hardtop coupe, the option package included the stronger boxed frame from the convertible, heavy-duty suspension, Impala brakes and special trim pieces
