Upon returning from World War II, many GIs used their mechanical skills to turn 1930s-era cars into hot rods. The hobby boomed, and Detroit responded by kicking off a horsepower war. Oldsmobile led the way, developing a high-compression overhead-valve 304-cubic-inch V8 engine for 1949. Not only did Olds install this hot new 135-horsepower engine in its full-size 98, but also shoehorned it into the midsize 76 — so named for its usual 6-cylinder power — thus creating the forebear of the muscle car, the Rocket 88. The Rocket 88 could accelerate from zero to 60 mph in about 12 seconds
