McMullen's roadster defined a whole new generation of rod builders not tied to the lakes or Bonneville. Think flames not primer, mags not steelies, and a blown small-block instead of a flathead Ford with Stromberg 97 carburetors. Racing always influenced hot rods, and that applied here, but this roadster's cues were coming from quarter-mile slingshots and Gassers instead of lakes cars and Indy. Also, as a budding freelance writer, Tom exposed the evolution of his highboy to hot rod enthusiasts almost monthly. He founded Street Rodder magazine in 1972.
