That 1.5-inch-dropped Don Long axle is the real deal, and arguably the coolest single part on this car. “Not being a dragster guy, I had no idea what a big deal Don was in that world,” Dan Semchuk recalls. “All I knew was that the Airoso brothers and some other big gasser guys in our area ran his straight axles, so I called him up in 1968. He told me to send the spindles, and he’d fit the king pins, put new bushings in, heat-treat the axle, and chrome everything. A couple weeks after I sent the parts and money, I still had no axle. I started to worry, so I called him back. Don said that he always waited until he received so many orders before setting up the jig. Two weeks after that, I got the axle. It was so cool, I couldn’t believe it. I still can’t; his welds are just beautiful!” What’s up front is all steel, except for the fiberglass hood that came with the car. The grille is a ’41–’42 item.
