In the 1960s, GM had a policy against putting engines over 400 cubic inches in its intermediate cars. Oldsmobile got around that rule with the Hurst/Olds, claiming Hurst was responsible for installing its 455-cubic-inch V8. The engine produced 390 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque in '68, but slightly milder tuning made it more drivable for '69. Zero to 60 mph took less than six seconds and the quarter-mile less than 14 seconds. Other features included an H-shaped dual-gate gear-shifter, a fiberglass dual hood scoop and a rear spoiler. Just over 900 were built for '69.
